IN MEMORY, Darryl Craig Mansell
Darryl's family and friends gathered in Hewett, South Australia to celebrate the life of a larger than life friend.
Darryl's family and friends gathered in Hewett, South Australia to celebrate the life of a larger than life friend.
Darryl's funeral service was celebrated on Saturday the 18th of January at the Hewett Community centre and was a relaxed meeting of friends and family just the way Darryl would have wanted it. The celebrant introduced us to Darryl's family and a short bio on his growing years. He then went on to tell us of his years after his navy career which brought us to this sad day.
His Navy service was picked up by friend Paul Williamson who told us of his character and how he got his nickname "Dibs" and some of the escapades they both got up to. Their friendship carried on after they both left the service and Paul went onto highlight some of his other ventures in civvie street. An excellent insight into a mate that would put his hand to anything and everything.
The celebrant then called on close friend Kim Rushworth who served as close as anybody else to really give us the gos on Darryl. Kim did not hold back and some of the stories had us all in stitches which brightened the gathereing no end. But at the end of the day Darryl has left us but as mentioned he has left a bit of him in all of us.
The gathering rose to their feet as John Lennon played the Last Post and Kim read the Ode. Darryl's coffin was led to the waiting Hurst and a Guard of Honour was formed by the many ex-bandies present and he was led away.
The wake was held in the community centre and as the weather was heating up again a welcomed cool ale, finger food and a good chat with relatives and friends brought the celebration to a close.
The ex-bandies who attended were Paul and Julie Williamson, Kim Rushworth, Dean and Elaine Butler, Doug and Lyn Drysdale, Randall "Ned" Kellas, Errol and Sharon Hatch, John Lennon and new found ex, Martyn "Dizzy" and Kathy Gillespie.
We thank Zona and family in sharing this sad day and we will remember Darryl as one of our close friends.
RIP
Darryl Mansell
